People often ask “what is there to do on a rainy November Saturday on the Coast?” Here is one option: spend it in the comfort of our beautiful Performing Arts Center! Even those who are not opera buffs are becoming enchanted with the Met’s Live in HD presentations.

On Saturday November 19, The Metropolitan Opera returns to the Newport Performing Arts Center for a live in HD presentation of Satygraha by Phillip Glass. The Washington Post calls this “a profound and beautiful work of theater”. The synopsis tells us of the early life of Gandhi in South Africa. The great news is that this performance is presented live from New York and if you don’t happen to speak Sanskrit, not to worry; English subtitles follow the script.

For more tickets and more information call 541-265-ARTS or log on to CoastArts.org. If your are fortunate enough to live in this Coastal Community you can take advantage of the rich local arts culture. Or you can make a wonderful weekend visit and sample the abundant local seafood in season. Come on over and sample some of the very best without the crowds.

The items need not be new. Well-loved, warm things for people of all ages and sizes are welcome. The only requirement is that they be clean. There is something special in sharing a well-loved item that is no longer needed in your home. What a great time to search your closet. I have seen several recipients while making drop offs at the distribution centers and can assure that each of these items is truly appreciated.

Why not clean out the closet and join Windermere West Coast Properties in sharing the warmth? All sorts of warm winter clothing – blankets too – are welcome. Drop boxes are located at the Seal Rock office 5693 NW Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Rock and at 567 N Coast Highway in Newport. Each week one of our volunteer brokers gathers up the donations and takes them to the distribution organization.

In 2009, the Windermere Real Estate offices in Newport and Seal Rock acted as collection points for all sorts of warm coats, hats gloves and blankets that were distributed by a partnership of community service organizations to needy members of our Coastal communities. Many dozens of gently used and clean items were put out into the hands of folks less fortunate. These ranged from toddler to adult sizes and included rain gear appropriate for our wet climate. We invite you to give the gift of warmth this year — you will be glad you did!

This weekend, volunteers can choose from more than 160 cleanup and watershed projects on the Oregon coast and inland rivers. This is the first year since the beach cleanups began in the 1980s that it has been expanded to include waterways that lead to the ocean. This is only possible because volunteer turnout is always so strong, numbering in the thousands. The selection of so many new locations (including a large number along the I-5 corridor) makes the opportunity accessible for more people than ever.

Here’s where to find what you need to know:

List of locations with link to register for each site

New interactive map to find locations in a more visual way

Coordinate a ride to the coast

Here’s what you should bring:

Clothing appropriate for the weather (which is looking fabulous for Newport) and sturdy shoes. (This isn’t a day for flip-flops.)

Sunscreen (a hat and/or sunglasses may also be welcome on a sunny day like we’re expecting!)

Mosquito repellent is recommended

Reusable containers for drinking water

A reusable bag or bucket to collect trash

A colander from home for sifting through sand to collect small pieces of plastic on the beach

The SOLV coordinators at each location will be providing:

Vinyl gloves and information on safe collection of debris

Litter bags for receiving debris from your personal bag or bucket

Instructions on where to get started

Biohazard/sharps containers

So… there you have it! It’s going to be a gorgeous weekend at the beach. Come out and make a difference on Saturday from 10 am – 1 pm — and enjoy the rest of the day here, too!

December 5th kicks off the holiday season in Newport. The Oregon Coast Aquarium sponsors the 17th annual Sea of Lights complete with activities for all ages and a chance to visit Santa. As a benefit for Lincoln County Food Share, the only cost for admission is the donation of two items canned or non-perishable food. Thousands of LED (energy efficient lights) will “gild the lily” in this already magical setting.

On the same night the Pacific Communities Health District sponsors the 15th annual lighted boat parade on Yaquina Bay. This spectacular parade of lighted boats may be viewed from both sides of the Bay. Boats range in size from commercial fishing vessels through sail boats and even sea kayaks. This parade is a fund raising effort by PCHD for Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital to add to needed equipment in the hospital’s birthing center. For tickets to ride a lighted boat, call Marine Discovery Tours at 541-265-6200. The event begins at 5 pm.

Join us for one of the year’s most special weekends on the Oregon Coast.

November 7, 2009 is the date for a much anticipated appearance by Lindsay Deutsch, a phenomenal young violinist, performing for the first time with the Newport Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Adam Flatt. The theme of this concert is Postcards featuring works by Claude Debussy, Ernest Bloch and George Gershwin.

In the week prior to the concert, Lindsay will join Adam Flatt during visits to five local schools to promote music education for kids, a subject that is very high on the priority list for both Lindsay and Adam. It is most gratifying to observe these wonderful professionals volunteer their time to encourage young people to explore the world of music. For more information and videos of Lindsay’s performances check out LindsayDeutsch.com .

Tickets for the concert at Newport’s Performing Arts Center may be obtained by calling 541-265-ARTS.

Come on over to the Central Oregon Coast and join us for an unforgettable evening.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium celebrates Sea Otter Awareness Week September 27- October 3. If you can plan a trip to Newport during this week you are in for a real treat. The Aquarium staff will have daily showings during Otter feeding times, talks and activities for kids of all ages. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe up close these amazing sea mammals.

Once hunted to near extinction for their pelts, Sea Otters are making a comeback as a protected species. Recognized as a keystone species, otters play a critical role in maintaining healthy kelp beds that in turn supports thousands of organisms in the marine ecosystem. The last recorded Sea Otter to be trapped off Newport was in 1906.

This writer has had the privilege of watching whole herds of these very social creatures in Alaskan waters. If you are not able to make the Alaskan trip, how about dropping by the Oregon Coast Aquarium?

Grandma Aggie, as she is fondly known, is the oldest surviving member of her family which originated on the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. In the late 1800′s her tribe was forcibly relocated to the Central Oregon Coast to a reservation at the headwaters of the Siletz River at what was to become the community of Siletz in Eastern Lincoln County. Throughout her life, Grandma Aggie worked to be a voice for the voiceless of the flora and fauna of our world many years before society began to realize the critical nature of preserving our environment. One of her most impressive accomplishments was to recreate the Salmon Ceremony which had been out of practice for 150 years. Hence she is the Keeper of the Salmon Ceremony. Salmon were a major focus in the economy and spiritual life of all Northwest Native American tribes.

As a young boy in 1950 I was privileged to visit Celilo Falls on the Columbia River to see Native Fisherman dip netting migrating salmon as their people had done for thousands of years. My Father encouraged me to remember this sight as I would never see it again. Shortly thereafter the Dalles Dam was constructed and flooded this ancient fishing grounds. Grandma Aggie is very much a treasure to us here on the Coast, not to mention to her sisters on the Grandmothers Council.
