People often ask “what is there to do on a rainy November Saturday on the Coast?” Here is one option: spend it in the comfort of our beautiful Performing Arts Center! Even those who are not opera buffs are becoming enchanted with the Met’s Live in HD presentations.

On Saturday November 19, The Metropolitan Opera returns to the Newport Performing Arts Center for a live in HD presentation of Satygraha by Phillip Glass. The Washington Post calls this “a profound and beautiful work of theater”. The synopsis tells us of the early life of Gandhi in South Africa. The great news is that this performance is presented live from New York and if you don’t happen to speak Sanskrit, not to worry; English subtitles follow the script.

Opera on the Oregon Coast

Outside it’s storming with wind and rain while inside the Newport Performing Arts Center the weather is perfect to enjoy performances of the Metropolitan Opera via HD TV. This past weekend we were treated to an encore performance of der Rosenkavalier by Strauss. Comedy, tragedy and romance all rolled into one with amazing performances by Renee Fleming and Susan Graham. Next Sunday, January 17 is the presentation of one of the worlds most popular operas, Carmen by Bizet. This performance will star mezzo soprano Elina Garancia in the role of Carmen — said to be one of the most demanding roles of all.

The Met comes to Newport again with a stellar performance. Tony Award® winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific) directs this new production. The opera is Offenbachâ€™s fictionalized take on the life and loves of the German Romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann — a fascinating psychological journey.

Newport Welcomes Lindsay Deutsch

November 7, 2009 is the date for a much anticipated appearance by Lindsay Deutsch, a phenomenal young violinist, performing for the first time with the Newport Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Adam Flatt. The theme of this concert is Postcards featuring works by Claude Debussy, Ernest Bloch and George Gershwin.

In the week prior to the concert, Lindsay will join Adam Flatt during visits to five local schools to promote music education for kids, a subject that is very high on the priority list for both Lindsay and Adam. It is most gratifying to observe these wonderful professionals volunteer their time to encourage young people to explore the world of music. The Metropolitan Opera Arrives in Newport

Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, with generous support from Jeanette Hofer, presented Puccini’s Tosca to a Newport audience via HD simulcast live from New York City on Sunday. The new, state-of-the-art screen was a pleasure to watch in all the crisp detail and with excellent sound. Jess Smith, a local resident formerly living in New York said this was almost like being there and in some respects even better.

I’m not an educated opera buff; however, it was a truly wonderful experience to see and hear some of the very best opera singers in the world, not to mention the world class musicianship of the Met orchestra. The next performance is Verdi’s Aida on the morning of October 24 at the Newport Performing Arts Center.

This performance was the first of a series of nine to be presented during the 2009/2010 season. More details can be found at the Oregon Coast Council of the Arts site.

Surf Sand and Symphony: Newport’s Orchestra begins 2009-2010 Season

Saturday, September 26th is an excellent time to visit the Oregon Coast and participate in the opening concert of the 2009-2010 Newport Symphony Orchestra season. The anchor piece, conducted by Maestro Adam Flatt, will be Symphony No. 5 “Reformation” by Felix Mendelssohn. The NSO will be performing this magnificent work in celebration of Mendelssohn’s bicentenary. In addition, there will be presentations of: Jubel Overture by Carl Maria von Weber, An Elegy to our Forefathers and County Band March by Charles Ives, and Fantasia on Greensleeves by Ralph Vaughan Williams. These great works will quote familiar anthems, songs and hymns. Concert begins at 7:30 PM with a pre-concert lecture by Maestro Flatt at 7:00 PM

Benefit Concert for Jazz at Newport: Holly Hoffman with Tall Jazz

Newport and the Central Oregon Coast are in for a wonderful treat on Saturday August 29, 2009 when renowned jazz flautist Holly Hofman performs with Tall Jazz of Portland in a benefit concert for Jazz @ Newport. Holly is considered the leading jazz flautist in the entire world as she takes it to new levels with each performance. Having enjoyed her performances for several years now, I can attest to the fact that the image of the shy retiring flutist is shattered once Holly goes on stage. In combination with Tall Jazz, a group of true professionals from the Portland area, Holly will bring you an evening of music that will not be soon forgotten. The Met Comes to the Oregon Coast

Thanks to the generous support of Jeannette B. Hofer Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, the Met returns to the Newport Performing Arts Center on March 21 with a simulcast performance of Bellini‘s La Sonnambula. This performance follows Puccini’s Madame Butterfly which aired two weeks ago and left not a dry eye in the house. Patrons like Jeanette make possible performances in all the art forms and are greatly appreciated and enjoyed by Coastal residents.
